Going Green In The Workplace

As global temperatures rise, the interest in devising ways to combat and prevent the finality of the planet also grows. In the 21st century, where life is far simpler than it ever has been, there is little excuse for not helping to dispose of waste that you produce. And while you might not think that you can make an impact, small changes can make the world of difference if we unite and change our habits together.

To get started, here are a few ways to combat the unwanted waste and make space for eco-friendly alternatives:

Zero your waste

Need your morning caffeine fix? Ditch the take-away cups and purchase a reusable cup. Most cafes will offer discounted prices off hot drinks when you bring your own cup, and if you forget, look at using compostable cups. Or even better, wait until you get to work to enjoy your tea or coffee – the humble mug never did it’s job so well!

Say no to single use plastics

Yes, it might have a recyclable logo – but is it actually being recycled? The UK exports 70% of its paper and 66% of its plastic for recycling, with no clear idea as to whether it gets recycled. China, along with other Asian countries, was once one of the main recipients of exported UK recycling, but since January 2018, they have banned imports of household plastics, and only accept cardboard and paper with less than 0.5% contamination.

Get online

Everything from bank statements, bills to books, can be accessed online. It’s possible to go paperless in so many ways in today’s society. Doing so means that when you do need to print the odd document, you will have offset your footprint elsewhere.

Try alternative transportation

Where you can, ditch the car and instead catch the bus, train, tram or ferry. Most season tickets are more affordable with a bit of forward planning, saving you a few pennies each paycheque while reducing your carbon footprint.

Instead of travelling via plane or driving long distances, find out if there is an opportunity for you to consult virtually. Using a meeting room on a video call can maintain a high level of professionalism, while eliminating the need to travel.

Save energy

Try energy saving light bulbs, both good for the environment and also cutting electricity costs. We have implemented this at Avenue HQ, where motion sensor lights are used throughout the buildings; within communal spaces, offices and meeting rooms all lights go out completely after 40 minutes of inactivity.

When devices aren’t in use, turn them off until you need to use them. You will soon formulate a habit and it will become an automatic action. Further to this, as you leave the office, for the evening or the weekend, why not ensure that everything like light switches, televisions and printers are turned off.
