Hot-Desking: Does It Work?
Hot-desking can get some bad press. But it’s not all doom and gloom. While some may prefer a more permanent desk set-up (which is completely fine, see why here), there are benefits to adopting a hot-desking work life.
We’re all for embracing your own work style at Avenue HQ. But what we do insist on, is making sure the option you choose is right for you.
It all comes down to the requirements of the business (and its owners).
So you might ask yourself, is hot-desking for me? As it’s not one-size fits all, see if any of the below apply to you…
‘I’m a people person’
Run a small business and find that communicating with the outside world doesn’t happen that often? (email doesn’t count). If you’re a freelancer or starting a business, you want to make new, meaningful connections everyday. But socialising doesn’t always have to be about networking. Sometimes a general chit-chat is just as useful as forming a business contact with a fellow hot-desker.
‘I’m a bit of a nomad’
You like to change your environment. Every new place you sit gives you a fresh boost of creativity. Hot-desking means that you have the flexibility of having access to a space where you can sit at a desk, sofa, bar… the list goes on. It also means that you have the option to change the location of where you work. You don’t have to feel guilty about not coming in every day, so don’t worry when you feel like staying at home once in a while.
‘Paperless is the future’
When it comes to it, what do you need to get your work done? A laptop, maybe a sticky note and pen every once in a while. Most of us do the majority of our work on a laptop these days, so gone are the days where filing cabinets and folders (the physical kind) are needed. Hot-desking eliminates the temptation of having paper pile up (for those ‘just in case’ moments). Tidy desk, tidy mind.
‘I’m not ready to commit’
We’ve all heard that one before… But, we get it, young businesses that have just started up can create uncertain times. And while you might need an environment that facilitates growth and helps you make new friends and contacts, cost may need to be kept down.
Any of the above resonate with you? If so, these are some of the benefits that come with a hot-desking lifestyle:
- Make new friends and build business relationships – At Avenue HQ 80% of our members have collaborated on projects with each other.
- Flexibility – The ability to adapt and change as much as your business does.
- Increased focus and productivity – A tidy, minimalist office space can clear your desk and mind of clutter.
- Cost efficient – Only pay for what you need.
While hot-desking might suit some more than others. There are rewards to reap for anyone trialling it out. At Avenue HQ we like to help members find out what suits them best. Why not have a look at the types of memberships we offer.
